Description
Kaluga Svyato-Lavrentiev monastery was founded in 1515, when Kaluga was an independent Principality. It is the oldest monastery of the city of Kaluga and Kaluga all the earth. The monastery is dedicated to Saint Laurentius and located in the place of his burial.Saint Lawrence was and remains prayer-defender of the Kaluga region. In the late XVIII century established the diocese of Kaluga and Svyato-Lavrentiev monastery converted into a parish Church. After 1917, almost all the buildings of the monastery: temples, tombs, and even monastery walls were destroyed. In 1991 the monastery was given the status of a natural monument of local importance. And at the end of 1994, there was the Bishop's residence was recreated – Kaluga Svyato-Lavrentiev monastery. Currently, the monastery transferred almost all remaining building of the monastery, work is underway to restore the bell tower and the main temple in honour of the Nativity of the blessed virgin.
